Pretty Pals January Blog Hop: Pssst, Happy Watercolor

2014janhop_badge

Welcome to our first blog hop of 2014. This month we are excited to show you the new products available in the Stampin’ Up! Occasions Catalog “Celebrate the Everyday” as well as a preview of the free products you can earn through Sale-a-bration at the end of January. You may just be starting the blog hop or may have come from Diane Roberts at Score at Four and a Quarter, number 15 on the Pals Hop. If you  get off track at any time, the full lineup below will help you move along from blog to blog so you see all of the amazing creations.

Watercoloring, much less happy watercoloring, is daunting particularly if you have not had any prior artistic tutoring.  I love playing with the watercolor themed stamp sets having been inspired by some pretty terrific examples over the years. Wish I could say that my talents aspire to those projects, but I cannot.  However, it does not stop me from playing and enjoying.  The newest catalog from Stampin’ Up!, Celebrate the Everyday, has an abundance of watercolor opportunities.  The Happy Watercolor stamp set, pg # 22, is just one of them…

Happy Watercolor by Katy McGloin

My first instinct was to stamp the image and just watercolor.  Certainly it would look so much better had it been done by a professional watercolor artist, but I was happy with these results.  I used watercolor paper, StazOn black ink (alcohol based so that the black lines won’t smear with water-based inks), an aqua painter (pages 156, 165 & 164 respectively) and desired colored inks obtained from the ink pads.

However, suppose you do not wish to watercolor!  The stamp set provides additional images that provide color block shading results.  With these, I stamped desired ink colors onto Whisper White cardstock. Whether or not these images were used as originally intended, I loved the easy effect they provided…

These splashes of color created by the various stamps are lovely, and no watercolor experience is needed!   Even the Daffodil Delight ink in the center of the flowers and the added Gumball Green ink to the stems were applied using the smallest color block stamp. Katy, your cards are beautiful! You are right, this stamp set will satisfy all watercoloring comfort levels – from the beginner to the experienced. Love how you showed both. Great job!!

Beautiful card Katy! oops, I mean sister! Loved seeing you at Leadership – can’t wait for Convention. My only regret is that you, Debbie and I didn’t get to visit more.

Katy, your cards are lovely. I’m always completely intimidated by any reference to watercoloring. The result is beautiful, but there’s no way I can do it. Thank you for showing those of us who can’t that there’s still a way for us to be successful with this stamp set.

Love both versions of this card! Your watercoloring is gorgeous and love the use of the new SU! Framelits along with the new stamps and other accessories. Thanks for sharing with us at SUO Challenges 🙂
